Birth of the Outliner

October 7th, 2004 . 2 comments

Last night, in another display of hardcore coding brilliance, Ton Roosendaal added a feature to bf-blender CVS that we’d been discussing a bit in IRC – an ‘Outliner’ scene management tool. I made a design proposal, from which Ton put this first working version together in the space of a couple of days. In this initial stage, it’s mostly useful for visualising, selecting and activating different Blender data for editing, and hopefully as it develops, we’ll see more interactive functionality being implemented. In particular, I’m really enthusiastic about the proposed Ipo channel editing functionality for setting keyframes etc, which would surely tie in quite nicely with the work on animation tools that Ton’s interested in doing for version 2.36.

    alleluja!

Finally, thank you Matt, i was just making mine but it is pretty primary though already better than SHIFT+F4. lol

By the way, you could change SHIFT+F4 for the Outliner, you would add another way to append objet and to switch “fake user” flag.

Anyway i note almost all dev don’t really read features requests (requested for at least 1,5 year)

    cheers

    Hi,

I don’t know about replacing data select (Shift F4) with the outliner, could be an idea, but perhaps the two things serve two different purposes. It sure would be good to bring the fake user functionality to the outliner though!

About your last comment: There is a big difference between reading feature requests and having the time, energy, motivation, priorities and skills to actually implement them 🙂 There are very few coders with the sort of knowledge of Blender’s internals to implement something like this – Ton is one of them, but is very busy.
